The apology comes after a Facebook post on Monday from a person claiming to be a family member of Jo-Anne Balog.

“I’m aware that there is a social media post yesterday by a family member and it indicates that he is only now learning that it was myself in that automobile accident,” Moe said.

“I have no explanation as to why the family members were not aware that it was myself that was involved in this automobile accident.”

Global News has reached out to the person who made the Facebook post for comment.

Balog, 39, was killed in the 1997 crash on Highway 3 near Shellbrook when Moe crossed the highway before it was safe to do so.

He received a ticket for driving without due care and attention and failing to come to a complete stop.

Moe has been very open about the crash. He says it is a day that he deeply regrets.

“It’s been part of the public record for some time, I’ve spoken about it in the 2011 campaign, the 16 (election) and the more recent leadership race,” Moe said during a campaign stop in Saskatoon.

“This is a day that I live with each and every day of my life and it’s a part of who I am, it’s a part of my decision-making process.”

Moe said he would be reaching out to the family to offer an apology.

“I’ve also understood and respected that there’s another family that experienced far more loss than I did on that day and I have always been aware of that and very respectful of that,” Moe said.

“I would offer my deepest apologies to the family and I will be doing that when I have the opportunity directly.”
